Hourly to Salary Calculator

This hourly to salary calculator converts an hourly wage to annual, monthly and weekly pay, or a salary back to an hourly rate.

Quick answer: To convert an hourly rate to an annual salary, multiply the rate by the hours worked each week and by 52 weeks. At £20 an hour and 37.5 hours a week the gross salary is £39,000 a year, or £3,250 a month. At 40 hours it rises to £41,600. Enter your own hours to match your contract.

How to use the Hourly to Salary Calculator

  1. Enter your pay. Type your hourly rate, or switch to salary to convert a yearly amount back to an hourly rate.
  2. Set your hours. Enter the hours you work each week and the weeks you are paid each year, for example 52 for full pay or fewer for unpaid holidays.
  3. Read the conversion. See the pay per hour, day, week, month and year before tax.

Formula & worked example

Formula: Annual = hourly rate × hours per week × weeks paid. Hourly = annual ÷ (hours per week × weeks paid). Monthly = annual ÷ 12.

Example: 16.50 × 37.5 h × 52 weeks = 32,175 a year (2,681.25 a month). 45,000 on 40 h × 52 weeks = 21.63 an hour.

Hourly Pay and Annual Salary, Compared

An hourly to salary calculator converts what you earn per hour into an annual salary, and the other way round. It also breaks the amount down into weekly, fortnightly and monthly pay so you can compare a wage with a salaried offer on equal terms.

It uses your own hours per week and weeks paid per year, instead of assuming a fixed 2,080-hour year, so part-time work, unpaid weeks off and different contracts are all handled correctly.

Converting Between Hourly, Monthly and Annual Pay

Pick a direction, enter your pay and describe your working pattern.

  • Hourly to annual: annual pay = hourly rate × hours per week × weeks paid per year.
  • Salary to hourly: hourly rate = annual salary ÷ (hours per week × weeks paid).
  • Full breakdown: hourly, daily, weekly, fortnightly, monthly and annual gross pay.
  • Flexible weeks: use 52 if holidays are paid, or fewer if weeks off are unpaid.
  • Paid hours per year: see the total hours your pay is based on.

All figures are gross – before tax and other deductions. Use a take-home pay calculator to see the net amount.

Why Converting Hourly Pay and Salary Matters

Job offers arrive in different formats, and comparing an hourly wage with a salary is not always obvious.

  • Compare an hourly job with a salaried job fairly.
  • Check whether a salary is worth it once you count the real hours you work.
  • Work out your monthly income to plan a budget.
  • Negotiate a rate knowing what it means over a year.
  • Understand how part-time hours change annual earnings.

Once you can convert quickly between hourly and annual pay, every job offer becomes easier to judge.

Worked walkthrough: comparing two offers

One job pays 16.50 an hour for 37.5 hours a week, paid for 52 weeks. That is 16.50 × 37.5 × 52 = 32,175 a year, or 2,681.25 a month and 618.75 a week. A second job offers a salary of 45,000 for 40 hours a week. Over 52 paid weeks, that equals 21.63 an hour. If only 48 weeks are paid because holidays are unpaid, the same salary is equivalent to 23.44 an hour. Putting both offers on an hourly basis makes the comparison fair.

Practical tips for Hourly to Salary calculations

  • Use the real hours you are contracted to work, including regular unpaid breaks only if they are not deducted from your pay.
  • For a job with paid holidays, keep weeks paid at 52. Reduce it only if weeks off really are unpaid.
  • Remember that monthly pay is annual pay divided by 12, which is not the same as four weeks of pay.
  • Compare gross figures with gross figures. A wage and a salary should both be before tax when you compare them.
  • If your hours vary, use your average hours across a few months for a realistic annual estimate.

Converting in both directions

The conversion multiplies the rate by the hours worked in a week and by the weeks you are paid. An hourly rate of 15 for 37.5 hours a week over 52 weeks is 29,250 a year, which is 2,437.50 a month and 562.50 a week. Going the other way, a 40,000 salary on a 40-hour week paid over 52 weeks is 40,000 ÷ 2,080 = 19.23 per hour.

Common hourly rates as weekly, monthly and annual pay

These figures use the calculator’s starting assumptions of 40 hours a week and 52 paid weeks a year, before tax. Weekly pay is 40 times the rate, annual pay is 2,080 times the rate, and monthly pay is the annual figure divided by 12. They work in any currency.

On a shorter week, or if some weeks are unpaid, the totals are lower, so change the hours and weeks paid in the calculator to match your contract.

Weeks paid: holidays and unpaid time

The weeks-paid setting is what makes the comparison honest. If your holiday is paid, keep 52 weeks. If you are only paid for the weeks you work, reduce it. The same 15 an hour over 46 weeks is 25,875 rather than 29,250, a difference of 3,375 for the same hourly rate.

Part-time hours and full-time equivalent

Salaries for part-time roles are often quoted as a full-time equivalent, meaning the pay if you worked full time. A 40,000 full-time-equivalent salary on a 37.5-hour week is worth 40,000 × 20 ÷ 37.5 = 21,333 to someone working 20 hours. Enter your actual weekly hours to see what you will actually earn.

Salaried jobs and the hours you really work

A salary looks different when the hours are longer than contracted. Working 45 hours a week for 40,000 is an effective 17.09 per hour, compared with 19.23 for a 40-hour week. When comparing offers, use the hours you expect to work, and consider paid holiday, pension and other benefits alongside the headline number.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Multiply your hourly rate by the hours you work each week and by the number of weeks you are paid in a year. At 20 an hour, 40 hours a week and 52 weeks, that is 41,600.

Divide the salary by the hours worked in a year (hours per week × weeks paid). A 41,600 salary on a 40-hour, 52-week basis is 20 an hour.

Because some contracts do not pay for holidays. Using fewer paid weeks gives a lower annual figure and a higher hourly equivalent for the same salary.

Before tax. It is gross pay. To see what you take home, use a calculator that applies income tax and social contributions for your country.

Monthly pay is the annual figure divided by 12. Weekly pay is the annual figure divided by the weeks paid, and daily pay assumes a five-day week.

Multiply the hourly rate by the hours you work each week and by 2. At £20 an hour and 37.5 hours a week that is £20 × 37.5 × 2 = £1,500 every two weeks. The calculator also shows fortnightly, weekly, monthly and yearly pay.

Many UK full-time jobs are 35 to 40 hours, and 37.5 hours (a 7.5-hour day) is very common. The weekly hours change the yearly figure noticeably: £20 an hour is £39,000 a year at 37.5 hours a week and £41,600 at 40 hours, before tax and National Insurance. Enter your own hours to match your contract.

At 40 hours a week and 52 paid weeks, 15 an hour is 31,200 a year before tax, which is 2,600 a month and 600 a week. On a 37.5-hour week it is 29,250 a year, and on 40 hours with only 48 paid weeks it is 28,800. The figures are gross and work in any currency, so change the hours and weeks paid to match your contract.

Divide the salary by hours per week times weeks paid. At 40 hours for 52 weeks, £40,000 is about £19.23 an hour.

Annual pay divided by 12. The result shows hourly, daily, weekly, monthly and annual figures at once.

Both lower your annual pay, and you can change both in the calculator. Enter the hours you really work each week and the number of weeks you are paid for; keep 52 if your holiday is paid. At 15 an hour, cutting from 40 to 30 hours a week takes the annual figure from 31,200 to 23,400, and being paid for 48 weeks instead of 52 on those 30 hours lowers it again to 21,600.

Gross pay only. Results are gross figures before tax and other deductions, based on the hours and weeks you enter. Your contract and payroll rules determine your actual pay. See our full disclaimer.
